We checked out of our airport hotel in the morning and drove our rental car from Keflavik Airport to Reykjavik (about 50 minutes drive). We parked our car at suggested free parking area near the harbor, and after checking in at the designated booth, made our way to Amelia Rose, our yacht for todays whale watching trip.
After the yacht left the harbor for the cruise, it passed by Harpa Concert Hall. The entire trip was 3 hours but 50 mins each way was just to get to the whale feeding area.
During this time of the year its mostly humpback whales and minke whales you can see in this area. We ended up seeing about 7-10 whales during our trip.
After the whale watching trip was over, we went about getting lunch. I had read that there was this popular hotdog stand Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur that famous celebrities (including Bill Clinton) had visited. While walking towards the stand, we could see a long line waiting and knew we had found it.
My opinion on the hotdog is that its overhyped but Iceland is super expensive when it comes to everything including dining and hotdogs are one of the more affordable options, so glad we tried it. Next we walked towards the shoreline and came upon Harpa Concert Hall again.
From the Harpa concert hall we walked along the shore line to the famous work of art in Reykjavik, the Sun Voyager.
Next we wanted to walk towards the Rainbow Street (Skolavordustigur Street).
We passed by quite a few buildings with various street art.
From Rainbow street we walked to Hallgrimskirkja, the iconic church of Reykjavik.
The church is free to enter but there is a fee to take the elevator to the top of the building for views of Reykjavik.
For dinner in the evening we walked from our hotel to Hlemmur Mathöll, a popular food court in Reykjavik. We opted for a pizza from Flatey.
Walking back to the hotel, we passed by this pastry shop that was selling ice-cream on fried donuts. Sign me up!!
It was after 9 pm and we decided to call it a night for a very exciting Golden Circle tour next day.
