Day 1:
We arrived at Bergen International Airport (BGO) on our flight from Reykjavik. Cheap and convenient way to reach the city center is the tram from airport to Byparken stop (near Bergen Centrum Station). One can pay for the tram in Skyss ticket app itself. I had already installed the Skyss app and it came in handy on our 4 days in Bergen.
After reaching Byparken Tram stop, we walked to our hotel for 4 night stay in Bergen, Hotel Oleana. After checking in and freshening up we set out for lunch. We stopped by Pingvinen Restaurant. I ordered the seafood sandwich (crab & prawn salad with lemon & caviar) while Karen went with stew with salted lamb and root vegetables. Karen enjoyed her lamb (except the crackers) and I absolutely loved my lobster/crab sandwich.
After lunch we walked over to the Bergen Fish market. Its actually a tourist trap but it was still interesting to walk along the length of it. Apparently the real fish market closed down long time ago.
There is a Mathallen building that sells sea food and has sit-down restaurant area.
We then walked along the harbor and could see the historic Bryggen neighbourhood just a 15 minutes walk away.
We stopped by Narvesen, a popular Norwegian chain store and had some gelato.
Wandering aimlessly and exploring the harbor area we came across a bakery. Karen got a Skoleboller (Skolebrød).
After wandering the streets of Bergen for about an hour we decided to call it a night.
Day 2:
After breakfast we walked from our hotel to Fløibanen funicular.
The funicular journey takes only 5 minutes to the top of Mount Floyen and soon we had a great view of Bergen.
The most popular attraction at Mount Floyen are the Floyen goats. These are cashmere goats that people love to pet.
There is lot of greenery at the top and park/playground for kids. After spending couple of hours at the top we took the funicular back down.
Next we walked to Lille Lungegårdsvannet, a small 5 acre lake very close to our hotel.
Next to the lake is Musikkpaviljongen.
By this time it was already noon and we decided to have a light lunch at The Daily Pot restaurant. The Daily Pot had great Tripadvisor reviews and we were not disappointed. I ordered the Thai Pot (coconut milk base) while Karen went with eggplant base.
After lunch we walked back to the harbor for our Mostraumen Fjord Cruise. Bergen is fjord central and we had a fjord cruise 3 out of 4 days in Bergen!!
Just as the boat is leaving the harbor, you get the best photo for the Bryggen.
The cruise starts the return journey after reaching the village of Modalen.
After returning back to Bergen we walked back to hotel and later went out for dinner at Kafé Spesial. We showed up without reservations and were lucky to be soon seated at the bar area. We ordered filet of cod plus tiger prawns (North African style) prepared in a sauce of tomatoes, bell peppers, garlic, fresh herbs, and olive oil. Served with freshly baked pita bread and garlic bread (which was delicious). The dish was spectacular and were happy with our selection.
After dinner we called it a night as we had a very long day next day (Norway in a Nutshell Day)
