Duration: 9 hours

Thai Airways operates  Boeing 747-400 aircraft on its Bangkok – Sydney route for its twice a day flights. Thai First Class on the 747 comes in two different configurations – a new first class with semi-enclosed suites and older with just plain open seats (with almost no privacy), both featuring flat-bed seats. Due to notorious aircraft swaps by Thai Airways (as reported by frequent flyers on this route), you don’t know what configuration you are going to get until you board the aircraft !!

Thai Airways 747-400 Royal First Cabin

After getting on-board we were elated to have gotten the new F with semi-closed suites.

Our Seat: 3E – 3F

I had selected seats 3E-3F (middle rows with direct aisle access) for me and Karen. My parents were in the forward part of the cabin with seats 1A and 2A.

Dining Menu
Me and Karen celebrating with some 2006 Dom Perignon

Dinner service started soon after takeoff. Me and Karen ordered some Dom Perignon to start off the party.

Canapes & Macadamia Nuts

The canapes were really tasty. The green one was some type of meat and coconut wrapped in betel leaf (Miang Kham). Next up was Thai chicken marinated with lemongrass which was also quite good.

Appetizer: Thai style Chicken marinated with Lemongrass
White Sturgeon Caviar

One of the highlights of First class menu is obviously the caviar service. Karen does not particularly care for the caviar which means all the more for me !! 🙂

Foie Gras with Roasted winter vegetable salad

After caviar service, came the Foie Gras which I have never had before. It was extremely delicious and my best item on the dinner menu on that flight. The flavor paired very well with the vegetable salad.

Lobster Thermidor

Me and Karen have both had Lobster Thermidor before in Singapore Airlines First Class (San Francisco – Hongkong and Hong Kong – San Francisco)  as well as Business Class (Singapore – Male) by ordering “Book the Cook” service. The one served on this flight was underwhelming compared to the ones served on Singapore Airlines.

Dessert: Sticky Rice with Mango & Pavlova with mixed berry sauce

By the time we were done with my entree, we were pretty full and I skipped both the cheese plate and the dessert while Karen only skipped the former. She ordered both the dessert items on the menu. She liked them both.

Selfie with Dad in Seat 1A

After dinner I went to check up on my Mom & Dad and took some selfies with them. It will always be such a memorable moment in my life where all four of us were flying together in First Class for the first time.

By the time I came back to my seat, the flight attendants had already made up my bed and I went straight to sleep soon after. The pillow, blankets and the mattress pad used on the seat were very comfortable.

My seat 3F made into bed

When I woke up, we were only about one hour out of Sydney. We were served breakfast right away and had to finish it pretty quickly as the pilot was announcing pre-arrival messages already.

Karen’s Breakfast: Fresh fruit, Yogurt and Bread with Jam
My Breakfast: Fresh fruit plate, Poached Egg with Roasted Bacon

Bottomline:

Seat: *****

Service: ***

Food: *****

The service on this flight was very good although not as good as Singapore First class. The flight attendants were courteous but some times the service felt less personal and more assembly-line style.

The seat was very comfortable. The semi-enclosed suites make the seats very private and on top of that we ended up having the only seats in the cabin that are together.

I was also very satisfied with dining options on the flight. I was able to pre-order Lobster Thermidor for entree menu on the Thai Airways website. For the first time I had caviar, foie gras and lobster all during same meal service !!

All that said, this will probably forever be the most memorable flight of my life due to the fact that me, Karen and my parents all flew together in first class for the first time ever.
