Day 1:
We traveled from Bergen to Oslo by train which left very early from Bergen and after 7 hours arrived at Oslo just past noon.
The scenic beauty on both sides of the tracks was outstanding. We had already done Bergen – Myrdal segment for our “Norway in a Nutshell” tour 2 days ago. But this time the 7 hour journey went by watching streams, lakes, forests on both sides of the train.
After arriving in Oslo, we walked across the Oslo central station to our hotel, the Amerikalinjen. After checking in and dropping our luggage, we walked 2 blocks from the hotel for our lunch at Mamma Pizza. We ordered the truffle cream pizza and liked it so much we had it again on our last day for lunch.
After lunch, we took the tram to Vigeland Park. I had downloaded the Ruter app and I could buy tickets through the app itself.
The park is artist Gustav Vigeland‘s life’s work and it was very unique. The sculptures were mostly of men, women and children in different period of their lives and celebrates life, love, family and growing old. There is no entry fee and is considered one of the top attractions in Oslo.
Right after the entrance to the park is the bridge with lots of statues on the sides.
After the bridge comes the fountain with various statues.
After spending about 2 hours in the park we took the tram back part of the way and got off and walked back to hotel while sightseeing along the way. We came across the Royal Palace.
Soon we made our way back to the most popular street in Oslo, Karl Johans Gate.
For dinner we walked about 20 minutes from the hotel to Pilestredet parkservering.
Day 2:
Our day started with a free walking tour of Oslo with Nordic Freedom tours. The tour starts from the Tiger statue in front of Oslo central station and ends near city hall.
From the Olso Central Station we walked to Oslo Opera House. Our tour guide gave us a history of the construction of this magnificent building.
Next we walked by Christian IV glove statue and then finally ended up at city hall.
The tour lasted 3 hours which was just the right length of time for a walking tour. It was time for lunch and we walked to Mathallen food hall to try fish sandwich at Vulkanfisk.
After lunch we decided to revisit all the places we visited as part of our free walking tour to enjoy the sites at our leisure. We arrived at Oslo Opera House first.
Next we walked to the historical Akershus fortress.
Next we walked to the Oslo city hall. Our guide earlier told us that the city hall has impressive murals inside so we queued up to get in (airport style security!!).
Next we walked back to hotel and tried some gelato on the way at Karl Johan’s gate.
In the evening we took the tram to Aker Brygge from our hotel. Unfortunately we arrived quite late and most shops had already closed and only very few restaurants were open.
Day 3:
This was our last day in Oslo and we were set to leave for airport just after lunch. We spent the morning walking along Akerselva river in the city. The Akerselva river flows through various neighbourhoods in Oslo and its a very nice, relaxing walk along the river through the city.
We ended our walk at the Anker Bridge over Akerselva river. The bridge had 4 bronze statues that were remarkable.
After our 2 hour river walk, we had just enough time to have lunch before heading to airport. We had liked the truffle pizza at Mamma Pizza so much that we decided to have a repeat before we left Oslo.
