Day 1:
We were staying at Admiral Hotel Copenhagen located just 3 minutes walking distance from the #1 popular tourist spot in Copenhagen, the Nyhavn. Colorful houses on both sides of the canal reminded me of Amsterdam.
It was early in the day and there were very few people around Nyhavn at that time. We walked towards Amalienborg palace, the official winter residence of the Danish royal family.
Just a 3 minute walk from the palace is the Frederik’s Church (aka Marmorkirken or the Marble church).
While walking back towards Amalienborg Palace, we saw the Alexander Nevsky Church from a distance. The building has the distinctive onion domes.
The changing of the guards was happening at Amalienborg Palace which we watched for like 5 minutes before proceeding towards the waterfront. There we came across a small park, the Amaliehaven.
You get a great view of the Copenhagen Opera house from the waterfront. We saw it up close later during our canal tour the next day.
Walking along the waterfront we arrived at the Gefion Fountain – the architecture of a group of oxen driven by Norse goddess Gefion.
Along the waterfront we found this cool modern architecture called ZinkGlobal. Made of various old machine components, its definitely unique.
Finally walking along the waterfront we came by the Little Mermaid statue. Based on the story of Hans Christian Anderson, this is probably the most popular Danish character and there were hordes of tourist buses at the park. We took some obligatory photos and moved along.
The statue is actually quite small.
We walked back the way we came and stopped at the Nordre Toldbod ferry terminal to cross the water to Reffen Street Food. We took the 992 ferry bus to Refshaleøen. We purchased tickets on Rejsekort App. It was a quick 5 minute across the water.
The Reffen Street food is a quick 5 minutes walking distance from the ferry terminal.
Me & Karen shared a duck fat fries with shaved truffles & cheese from one of the shops and pad-thai from another. Food is extremely expensive in Copenhagen!! The fries were 24€ whereas the pad-thai was 18€.
From the Reffen Street food, we walked back to Nyhavn which was a good 45 minutes walk.
Later in the evening we walked 10 minutes from hotel to a pizza restaurant.
Day 2:
We started the next day early morning 15 minute walk from our hotel to Rosenborg Castle Gardens (aka Kings Garden).
Next we saw the Rosenborg Castle from outside.
After spending an hour at the King’s Garden, we walked back to our hotel. Our hotel was right next door to the pier where the canal tours depart.
Either it was an off day for tourists or maybe not the season because we were one of 3 couples on the whole boat.
At the conclusion of the canal tour, we walked about 20 minutes to Freetown Christiana. This is an anarchist community with colorful homes which has been famous for its open cannabis trade in the premises. We didn’t see any illegal behavior there :).
After walking around the neighbourhood we were getting hungry and made our way back towards hotel. On the way we came across Broens Streetfood.
We had some Shrimp tempura and Chicken Shwarma.
We had a 7 PM flight out of Copenhagen airport to Amsterdam and so we checked out of the hotel to head for airport. We took the metro from Kongens Nytorv metro stop back to Airport.
