Satara Rest Camp, Kruger National Park
Kruger National Park, Satara Rd, South Africa

Satara Rest Camp is located in central Kruger about 90 km from Orpen Gate.  This camp houses a range of accommodations from basic Camp Sites (about $20USD/night) to Bungalows to luxurious Guest Houses ($525 USD/night). We had booked a couple of Bungalows ($110 USD per night) for 3 nights with this description – BD2V (BUNGALOW): 2 single beds, Air-conditioned, Fridge, Hotplate, No smoking, Perimeter, Sink, Utensils, WC and shower. These bungalows were marketed as “perimeter bungalows” meaning they were close to the fence. All that separated you from safety and the big cats out there was electric fence!!

This is a very game rich area especially for Lions. If you really care about lion sightings, this is a must stay camp.

Bathroom & Sink

Our room did not get hot water for the first 2 days, therefore me and my wife had to take showers in our parent’s bungalow. After repeatedly complaining to the front desk they had it finally fixed on our last day.

Kitchen Area with Hotplate, Fridge

It was very important to keep the refrigerator locked. On our second day, I had forgotten to lock that cage and 2 monkeys came by and helped themselves with leftovers (and a full pineapple) in a span of 15 minutes.

It was kind of exciting to walk next to the  fence knowing all that separated us from safety was the electric lines.

Tindlovu Restaurant Seating Area

Me and my wife had meals at the in-property Tindlovu Restaurant during the day and we just got takeout pizzas at night.

The Mozambique Chicken Curry I had for lunch was very delicious. We liked the chicken wings too.

Thumbs up:

  • Very affordable accommodations compared to Private Reserves
  • Fridge came with cage for security against monkeys
  • Lions, Lions and More Lions – If you want to see lots of Lions, this is the place to say. We saw so many lions on our 3 night stay that it was just amazing.
  • Pricing very reasonable for dining as well as convenience/souvenir shop.

Thumbs down:

  • Cold running water for 2 days. Only after repeatedly complaining did they fix it finally.
